My Vida Loca!! (Part II)

This post is part of a series. For part I, see My Vida Loca! (Part I)

So I lost my wallet...

In the hood, where I live...

My neighbor, the Infamous Hen-Dog said, "You know, you didn't lose it on our street. It must've fell off the trunk of your car on that turn up on Capital Avenue. Because if you lost it on our street, the crackheads would've brought it back, but they would have wanted some money for finding it."

I nodded when he said that. We do have very loyal crackheads. But Hen-Dog's commentary didn't make me feel much better.

I was still bumming...

But I had to be proactive.

So that Tuesday, the 29th, I took the morning off from work and went to the DMV to get a driver's licensce. I didn't get there at nine o'clock a.m. like I planned though. Yeah, I was on my way, but some ten miles from home, I had a thought:

Did I let the garage door down when I left home that morning?

So my newly paranoid ass turned back around and sped back home. Sure enough, I'd let the garage door down. Didn't hurt to go back and check, though.

My trip to the Union City DMV was uneventful, and it took about an hour to get my license. I sat there during that time reading a book and pecking away on my laptop, making a few corrections to my manuscript. I left and went to Wal-mart, buying a new wallet along with a few other things. On my way to work, I dropped off a few mix CDs to my book club president.

Then I went to work. I should've went home, because I hate working half-days. I don't get anything done... I chalked it up as a socializing day.

Well, on my way home, I stopped by a downtown grocery store to get some chicken. I wanted some sauteed chicken to go over my salad, and they had a sale.

So I leave the grocery store and speed on down the road... Traffic is a bit heavy. You know how downtown Atlanta traffic is.

I've got my music crunk, bobbing my head hard to one of The Kat's mixtapes, singing down.

I make a turn onto Courtland Street from North Avenue.

I thougt to myself, "Damn, this road feel a little crunchy."

I kept driving. I said aloud "I don't remember them doing any construction on the road. Why is it feeling gravelly and crunchy?"

I sat in traffic that had accumulated.

When I tried to move again, I realized... The road ain't crunchy.

My tire had blew out. And the way things sounded, I was riding on rim!!

"Dang!" I yelled.

I tried to pull over to the side of the road, in the midst of angry ATLiens hurriedly trying to get home. I almost got hit by a big ass SUV when I pulled into his lane. He flipped me off and said some terrible words.

"You'll be alright!" I yelled as he went around me.

I sat there in my car, on the side of the road, waiting for traffic to quiet down. I looked in the rear view mirror and saw a throng of cars stopped behind me at a stoplight... The road was clear, so I hopped out of my car. I ran around to the passenger side and sure enough, my tire was flat, all the way down to the rim.

I wanted to scream.

You see, my AAA card was in my wallet... the wallet I'd lost, that is.

I wanted to cry!

Okay... so I am standing there, staring down at the dead tire, trying to think... Trying to think of who to call and what to do.

And who jumps out of nowhere?

A freakin' CRACKHEAD!!!!

He scared the hell out of me!!

I gasped. I had no idea WHERE he'd come from... It was like he'd jumped out of the bushes or something. He smelled like he'd jumped out of a trash can. I stepped back, away from the thick cloud of funk he produced.

"What's up baby?" he yelled, arms stretched out like he was about to give me a hug or something.

I looked him up and down. He was tall, dark as midnight, thin as a rail. He was a young dude, dressed in an oversized black t-shirt, baggy pants with the one pants leg rolled up (LL Cool J style) and a pair of dirty Timberland boots. He looked like a dirty crunchy black brokedown version of the Mayor of my hood, the cleanest crackhead in the world, Snake.

(Sidenote: Snake has been locked up all summer long. I miss him sooooo much!!)

"Baby, you got a flat tire," he declared.

"Uh, yeah," I said, still looking him up and down...

...Wondering silent to myself where my blade was, just in case I had to shank this fool.

"Well, you got a spare?" he asked when I didn't say anything else.

"Uh, yeah," I said quietly.

"Well let's get this tire changed, baby!" he yelled, rubbing his hands together.

We walked around to my trunk, and I opened it, quickly surveying the contents to see if I had anything worth stealing in it. My laptop and bookbag were in there. I quickly grabbed up both.

I also grabbed a long screwdriver. My homeboy Tiny must've left it in my car when he was changing out my speakers (an upcoming post).

I threw the bags in the backseat, and the screwdriver in the door panel of the drivers side.

...I would need it, just in case I needed to shank this crackhead.

He pulled the spare tire out, and even found a jack and tools that I didn't even know that I had.

"Damn baby, you got a lot of money in this trunk," he yelled as he scavenged pennies from the floor of my trunk.

That pissed me off. (Where is my screwdriver?)

"Uh, yeah," I said. "Yo bruh, cut that out, man," I said quietly.

He laughed and removed the spare tire from the floor of my trunk. He jacked up the car and commenced to removing the lug nuts. While he did this, I had to hear curse ladened tales of his encounters with the police, his kids, and about the shelter somewhere down the street.

(Why is it that dudes I don't know and don't want to know tend to get diarrhea of the mouth and tell me ALLL of their business? Dang!)

He caught me looking at him and smiled. I stepped back in disgust. I wasn't scoping him out, I looking at his hair. He had that good hair, and it wasn't from a kit. I was looking at him, wondering how a man as black as asphalt could have hair that damn curly. I was in NO way checking him out.

It was NOT that kind of party.

One of the lug nuts would not come off... So he begins jump up and down wildly on the thing he was using to remove the lug nuts. His antics worked, a bit too well. The lug nut came off, along with a piece of the stud.

We both yelled "DAMN!!"

I looked at him, wishing that I had the screwdriver in my hand...

So I could shank him...

We stood there a minute looking at the tire. I walked a few feet away and picked up the lug nut containing a piece of the stud off of the ground. I bounced the hot lug nut around in my hand, and blew the dirt off of it.

"I'm sorry, baby," he apologized.

I was pissed off. I waved my finger in the direction of the tire. "Dude, I can ride off of three studs. Put the spare tire on," I suggested.

He just looked at me.

"Shorty, come on! Put it on!" He needed to hurry up before I had more thoughts of running to get that screwdriver!

He pulled off my tire, and rolled it to me. It was a dead tire alright, wires and threads poking all out... I hadn't had them checked this year. It was definitely time for a new set or something.

He put on the spare tire, and let the jack down.

The spare tire was flat.

"Let me put all this stuff in the trunk, then we will roll to the gas station and get some air for the spare, baby," he said.

Okay. I didn't know of a gas station downtown, but he said it was around the corner. Traffic was thick, so I thought if he tried anything, I could shank him with the screwdriver, and toss his ass out of my car into a ditch or something...

We got in the car. I let ALL of the windows down because of the high amount of funk emitting from this dude. He saw some change in my cupholder and began scavenging it. Didn't matter to me, because it was some sticky change that had been sitting there after some peppermint melted in the cupholder. He could have that damn 8 cents if he could pull it out for all I care. He started looking around on the floor.

"Uh, what are you doing?" I asked.

"Baby, you sure do have a lot of change laying around!"

Luckily, there was a gas station on the next block. He jumped out and put air in all of my tires.

"Thank you," I said, and gave him 5 dollars.

He stared at me.

"What, man?" I asked.

"I need a ride," he said. "Just down the steet to Auburn Avenue."

He jumped back in the car before I could say anything... I turned on the street and headed towards Auburn.

Then he asked a question.

"Baby, you got a man?"

I almost screamed in utter disgust. "Yes. Several," I said.

"Oh, OK, just checking," he said. He then went on to talk about his sexual prowess, which was a bit hilarious.

I had the screwdriver in my left hand, out of sight...

Just in case I had to shank this fool.

I let him out 2 blocks down from the gas station. He leaned back down into the car, still trying to run game.

"They call me Lye-Lye. And if you need anything at all, anything, some loving, your tires changed, anything at all, you come look for me, ok baby?"

"Oh, of course,"
I said with a smile, trying my BEST not to break out laughing.

I sat at a stoplight and watched him march across the street, counting his dollars and scavenged change...

I let go of my screwdriver, glad I didn't have to shank that fool.

Mad because of the sweat and funk he left on my cloth passenger seat.

I drove the 3 miles to my house and parked the car in the garage, careful to leave all the windows down so that the funk could dissipate.

I walked into the garage later in the evening and discovered the funk was now thick in my garage. I grabbed a spray bottle of Febreeze and soaked the seat with half the bottle.

I had my tire changed and stud replaced down the street from my house on Friday at a bootleg tire place. Hen-Dog and I pass the tire place everyday on the way to work, and I never saw it until he pointed it out to me last Thursday.

Now, getting a new tire(s) is a whole 'nother piece of drama in my week. I won't go into it... Let's just say, despite my LOUD protests, the mechanics made me go get my own studs, lug nuts and brakes... (yeah i said it, brakes... I needed new brakes). If that ain't bootleg, I don't know what is.

And you know how old men like to flirt.

Um... Let's just say it took a LOT of talking to get the work done on my tire... LOL!!

I also had MORE drama... I have an ongoing autoimmune disorder, and I got a call from my doctor about some blood tests on my last doctor's visit. She made some suggestions that I was NOT happy about... She wanted me to double up on my meds. I almost opened my Book of Cuss and was one step from cussing her out. I will not go into it here. (My girls know what's up). I will just be mature, do what she says, and call it a day...

I could not understand how I could get hit with so much crap in one week...

But something else happened last week...

Something remarkable...

Something that I would NEVER have imagined in a MILLION years...

All the drama I went through all week?

This, BY FAR, canceled all of that out... BY FAR!!!!!

My Vida Loca!! (Part I)

**(Last week was a wild swashbuckling week, something beyond the ordinary for this Original Oldgirl... but it, My Vida Loca, ended on an exceptionally good note. Something happened that I could not imagine in my wildest dreams... read on, and stay tuned for parts 2, 3, and possibly 4)**

I, LadyLee, pride myself on living a relatively quiet life.

Most of the time, I skip along merrily like a Smurf who has had bit too much Smurf Juice on ice.

No fuss. No drama.

Just chillin'...

But last week was quite a hellacious week for me. The last week of August was... Let's just say there was drama to the left and drama to the right. Drama all around me.

Drama, Drama, Drama.

So with that said, let me get a little more specific.

Lost!!! So early last Sunday (the 27th), I laid in bed, under my warm down comforter, on the cordless phone, wailing loudly and uncontrollably to an equally sleepy and wailing Ladytee about not wanting to go to 7:30 am church service. She and I had been yacking HARD on the phone until at least 2 o'clock in the morning, both pretty confident that we could get our butts out of bed and go to church anyway.

Well six o'clock Sunday morning, LadyTee said bump it, she ain't going to church. I didn't know if I was going or not so I kind of just laid in bed, staring at the slow whirling ceiling fan, trying to decide what to do. I almost didn't go, but it was one of them days where I really needed to take my tail to church, so I got up, took a bath, hurriedly got dressed, and gathered up my bible, some CDs, purse, WALLET, and keys, and headed through the laundry room, out the back door, and down the steps of the garage. I threw everything on the trunk of the Mazda, fiddled around with my keys and opened the door to the car. I quickly grabbed up all my stuff, threw it on the passenger seat, jumped in the car, and then sped to the Southside for church.

I got to church, decided to organize my things before I went in and then I realized...

No WALLET.

I tore up the car looking for it. Still...

No WALLET.

Now, I have done some dumb sh** in my lifetime: Marrying Old Boy, smoking dope, hanging with the wrong folk, messing up a lot of money... just to name a few. All kinds of dumb sh**.

But sitting in the church parking lot, seeing in my mind's eye that WALLET clearly on the trunk of the car before hastily leaving, and then leaving that WALLET on the trunk of the car...

I tell you, that has to be the dumbest sh** I've done in years!!

I wanted to scream.

I called up my brother, Kari, aka "Milk and Cookies". He was in mid snore when he answered the phone. I managed to get him to get on up and walk around outside, and drive the route to the freeway to see if he saw my wallet on the ground. I sped back home like I was in a police chase. I drove the route several times my ownself.

No WALLET.

I wanted to cry!

I had all of my credit cards, 3 debit cards, and all kinds of stuff in my overstuffed WALLET. Luckily, much of the card information was in my online banking files so I was able to call everyone and get things canceled by ten o'clock in the morning.

I bummed around all day, just upset as all get out.

I felt MUCH better after attending my always useful and fulfilling journal writing meeting later that day, but I felt as if I still had a "STUPID IDIOT" bumper sticker plastered askew across my forehead.

Whoever got my cards didn't do much damage. Nothing happened with my debit cards, although they bought cell phones with my government travel card, and they had a grand time at Macy's- to the tune of 900 bucks. Dang!

Well as of this Saturday, I have a new license, and all of brand new shiny debit and credit cards...

So now, I'm fighting the paranoia bug. I am always looking in my purse at the brand new wallet, with only the license, the debit cards and one major credit card in it. I want to sleep with it under my pillow at night.

That was my one allowed stupid thing to do for the year... well maybe not. The year ain't over...

But although it was some stupid ish, I realize, ish happens!!

But I had a bit more drama last week...

To be continued in My Vida Loca, part II...

He didn't do it... Go figure.

You've seen this man all over the news, so I'm not going to even type out his name. Afterall, in a couple of week's time, he became a household name.

Question: Am I the only one who thought that this dude was lying about murdering J.on Be.net Rams.ey?

It really unnerved me just to see him on television. I mean, I could tell that he was a few sandwiches short of a picnic. All of his cups were not in the cupboard. The elevator did not go all the way to the top floor.

Bump that. Homeboy's Elevator was busted... broken... out of order.

I found it interesting how the media dug waaaay back into this man's past and dug up ALL kinds of dirt on him. After hearing all of the stuff about the child po.rn, the broken marriages to young girls and his search for a sex change...

And worst of all, his intense fascination with the Jo.n Ben.et Ram.sey case... I have only one word for him...

Delusional.

He got so wrapped up in the case that he convinced himself and others that he was the killer.

All of the DNA tests came back negative. Go figure. I was not suprised.
He worked it all out where he got his 15 minutes of fame.

He got his 15 minutes of fame. He got the attention he wanted.

And now...

He's nothing more than a footnote.

Remembering Katrina...

Approximately one year ago, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans.

Now, I wrote a post on this last year around this time, when it was first mentioned that Hurricane Katrina, a Category 5 storm, was barreling straight for New Orleans (see this post). I was completely unnerved by it all because I'd lived in New Orleans from 1998 to 2001, and although it had been one of the darkest times of my life, I met some phenomenal people there, people that really stood by me while I lived there.

I lived in New Orleans East near one to the levees and I remembered how it just completely unnerved me that the streets would flood during a hard rain. I would leave work at the first sign of it getting dark and about to rain sometimes. My coworkers use to laugh at me because I was so frightened of the rain and the horrendous fog.

"Don't worry, Dr. Ladylee, it's just a disturbance out in the Gulf!"

"The hell you say," I would say during their laughter.

I was so amazed at friends who said they weren't going anywhere if a hurricane was predicted to hit New Orleans. There had been too many false alarms, and it just wasn't worth it to leave.

I would shake my head vigorously. I promised them that if the weatherman even so much as uttered the word "hurricane", I was going to be the first one diving head first into my Mazda and hightailing my ass up I-10 straight to Atlanta.

So when it was forcasted that Hurricane Katrina was headed for New Orleans...

...I thought about all of the friends I'd made there.

I wasn't just someone watching the news, I was someone who knew some of these people. I thought of all the love I had received, some people even treating me like one of the family, allowing to spend holidays with their families when I couldn't come home to Atlanta for the holidays. I thought about so many other good times I had there.

I saw how they tried to shelter everyone at the Superdome and the Covention center.

I thought, that is cool and all, but New Orleans is like a big bowl. The pumps break down and it floods when it rains just a little to hard...

Shouldn't they get those folks out of the city?? I thought, while watching the news report on the impending storm.

Oh well, I thought. They know what they are doing...

Then the damn levees broke.

And the city flooded.

I was standing in the lab at work when my boss came in and said that they were saying on the news that the levees had broken, and most of the city of New Orleans was under water.

I tried calling everyone I knew down there, just to see who was heading my way, just to see if I could be of assistance.

I couldn't catch up with any of them.

And it really bothered me.

Some months later, I heard from several friends... All of them had lost everything. And not only did they lose everything, but some were being treated terribly in places where they had relocated to after the storm. I was an open ear when a few of them needed to talk, just needing to have someone listen to their plans, etc... I listened, but didn't understand. I just accept it for what it was...

Their need to work things out in their head...

Personally, I can't wrap my mind around how to deal with losing everything I own: job, car, house...everything. I mean, I lost my wallet on Sunday, and it completely unnerved me to spend a damn hour canceling credit cards and spending a few minutes on Monday and today just clearing up other related matters.

Just imagining having to evacuate my home, and returning to see it completely destroyed, not even being able to find my loved ones...

... I can't even set my mind to imagine such a thing.

And here we are a year later, and they are showing pics of New Orleans on television. They are still finding dead bodies, from what I hear. There are still places in New Orleans, a year later now, that still have no running water, sewage, or lights. People need FEMA trailers but can't get them. I know folks still waiting on FEMA checks, even after a lot of folks fraudulently got over on FEMA.

So I ask the same question that puzzled me, and so many others, I imagine, every since this terrible tragedy happened...

We are the United States, the richest country in the world, a super power.... at the forefront of technology; able to launch shuttles and rockets into space....

... so happy to skip and run our asses around the world to other countries whenever they yell "help"...

... more specifically, happy and a bit too eager to spend billions of dollars over in Iraq, in the most confusing so called idea of a "war".

You mean to tell me we can do all this... and do it without so much as breaking a sweat...

And we couldn't even take care of a city that is on our own land... the city of New Orleans.

We couldn't even take care of our own house? And if it wasn't for the intense media coverage...

(Dang, I don't even wat to think about that. Folks would probably STILL be stuck at the Superdome.)

Why is that? Why did it take several days for the government to say,

"Uh... gee, maybe we should, uh, do something."

Would this have happened in West Palm Beach, Nantucket, Camp David, or Malibu... or in Crawford, Texas? (I can answer that. Heck no. They would have built a levee in 24 hours to protect those places. Yes, you know we got the technology to do all that if we really wanted to).

Humph.

And the new term that was coined for the displaced people: "American Refugee". What an oxymoron.

And lets not even talk about the residual effects this tragedy has had on the displaced families. The results of the mental, emotional, and physical issues this tragedy has caused will be seen for a couple of generations at least...

Are we prepared for something like this if it happens again??

I do hope so...

And if not... God help us all.

The Kat's Mixtapes!!

No, no, NOOOOO! I'm not talking about that cat! Not my cat Oscar-Tyrone.

He always has that look that says...

"I can't stand dealing with you awful trifling negroes!"

Not him. I would NEVER make his little prejudice behind a mixtape!

No I am talking about one of my book club sisters, "Kat".

"Kat" is one of my book club sisters... She is the ultimate guru, who's about to turn 50, and she just won a 10 day all expenses paid trip to Hawaii, for being the best doggone employee on the planet...

Now that's a prize, ya'll.

Really though.

Well anyway, Kat walked up to me at Saturday's book club meeting over at the Mechanicsville Library near downtown Atlanta, and says that she saw something on my blog about some tapes.

"The Librarian Mixtapes?" I asked, just shocked that she walked over and said something to me...

You gotta understand, this woman is like "Walking Wisdom" or something. Every word she speaks is profound and completely off the charts!! It took me a minute to fully decipher what she was saying. I just knew there was a metaphor, a key to life, an answer to some deep probing question, a solution to some world problem, a much needed piece of scripture, something in what she had said to me...

You gotta understand, when Kat speaks, we ALL catch a freakin' crook in our necks trying to hear what she's trying to say!

No, she was just commenting on my blog post and the songs on those Librarian's CDs...

"You want me to make you some CDs, Kat?"

"Sure!" she said.

Well, I had to think REAL long and REAL hard about what songs to actually give her. I now have over 144 hours worth of music on my laptop, and it will be hard to narrow down all of that to 50 songs. I will most definitely supply her with copies of the The Librarian Mixtapes, that's for sure. But I knew I wanted to make her something extra special for her trip. I knew one thing: there had better be some positive songs on those CDs, since she's always on the positive tip. I've never made a Disco CD before, and I wanted to give her something that would remind her of her Afro sportin', bell-bottom kickin' days.

And you know, she is going to Hawaii with her husband, her boo...

You know she gotta have some slow romantic ish!!!

Really though!!

LOL!!

So these CD's are for you, Kat! Got you a nice little carrying case and er'thang!!

I'm also throwing in a best of Luther mixtape, and a best of the O'Jays mixtape... And I am trying to negotiate with Cowgirl Cre right now for her to bring all of her Stevie Wonder CDs in... so we can get a best of Stevie Wonder CD together...

That should get you straight through that looooong plane ride.

It's the least I can do. You truly inspire me...

Really, you do.

Enjoy!! And I will get these to you at the Journal writing meeting on Sunday!
