Bootleg Bookmarks

I posted this blanket last week:

It required 600 squares.

One thing about making a blanket with so many squares is that there are always extra squares.

No, they are never from the pot or bowl or bag I store them in, for use as I crochet.  They are the squares I find when I am moving furniture to vacuum the carpet.

A square here, a square there...

Sometimes they are lodged between the sofa cushions. I think I even found one in Oscar's bed.

And from the Mellow Yellow blanket, I found 9 squares scattered about.

I usually throw them away.  I thought about giving them to my work group specialist.

He saw some of my crochet project laying on my desk and decided to pick it up and give it a try.
He is terribly impatient. He loves to debate and argue. And he stands too close up in my personal space (you can tell that in the picture... look at the location of my arm).

It's one thing to argue over science, but come on, man. I don't want to argue about crochet.

Good thing he has a short attention span. He sat it down and walked away.

Like I said, I was going to throw the squares away. I am still finding squares from blankets made years ago, and this seems to be the best thing to do. One of my friends said "No, save them!"

"For what?" was my reply. I don't see myself making a yellow blanket like that any time soon.

She didn't know why I should save them.

So I did. Just for her. And I crocheted them into strips.
We'll just call them... bookmarks. Yes, bootleg bookmarks.

I am sure she will look at me half crazy when I give them to her. But she is gracious, never one to hurt my feelings.

It reminds me of the items I made when I finished up Tayari Jones' blanket, Fernie Mae.

(I did not name that blanket. She named that blanket. I am sure it means something. She is deep off the pages like that).

I made potholders.

I still had a lot of yarn left over. Oh well. That was 5 or 6 years ago. I have no idea where that extra yarn is. Maybe I threw it out. But making those potholders were quick and fun little projects.

And making the bootleg bookmarks was fun too...

Hopefully my friend will enjoy them.

  1. You should save them and make a "collage" blanket from the ones you have left over.

    1. That's what the pattern calls for anyway. It's suppose to be a "scraps" blanket. I don't know if I can deal with that much tackiness.

See the original scrap blanket here: http://ladylee35.blogspot.com/2007/12/makings-of-gift.html

  2. You find squares when you vacuum. I always seem to find bobby pins and pennies.
